SAU Tech Career Academy Students Win Top Honors at Arkansas SkillsUSA Competition
Students from the SAU Tech Career Academy earned top honors at the Arkansas SkillsUSA Competition help in Hot Springs from April 13-17, showcasing their skills in high-demand career fields like welding and healthcare.
The statewide competition brings together career and technical education (CTE) students to compete in industry-driven contests designed to reflect real-world workforce standards.
Welding Students Win First Place in Pipe Welding
Derek Wagner, a welding student at SAU Tech Career Academy, earned first place in Pipe Welding, demonstrating advanced technical ability, precision, and professionalism. Competing against top students from across Arkansas, Wagner's performance highlights the importance of skilled trades in today's industrial and manufacturing workforce.
"Hard work pays off—Derek proved it!" said Justin Freeland, Welding Instructor at SAU Tech Career Academy in Camden. "Winning at this level is huge, and there's nothing more satisfying than watching your student take first place at the state level. I'm proud of him—he has a bright future ahead."
Healthcare Student Earns Bronze in State Competition
Another standout student, Amanullah Rowden, earned a bronze medal in High School Basic Health Care Skills, further highlighting the strength of SAU Tech's healthcare training programs.
The Health Science competition category included Nursing Assisting, Basic health Care Skills, and First Aid/CPR—key areas for students pursuing careers in healthcare.
"We are extremely proud of Amanullah for this accomplishment," said Lisa Beard, Medical Instructor at SAU Tech Career Academy in Magnolia. "This recognition reflects the hard work and determination our students bring to their training and future healthcare careers."
Career-Focused Training for High School Students in Arkansas
The SAU Tech Career Academy provides high school students across South Arkansas with opportunities to explore career pathways through hands-on, industry-focused training while earning college credit.
With a strong emphasis on workforce readiness, the program connects students with experienced instructors, modern equipment, and real-world learning environments. These experiences prepare graduates for immediate employment in skilled trades and healthcare or continued education.
