SAU Tech receives $5 million in federal funding for manufacturing and defense center of excellence

Southern Arkansas University Tech (SAU Tech) has reached a major milestone in the development of its future Manufacturing and Defense Center of Excellence in Camden, Arkansas, receiving the first $5 million portion of a previously announced $20 million federal investment.

The funding will help SAU Tech move forward with equipment acquisition for the new center, which is designed to expand workforce training, advanced manufacturing education, and partnerships with defense and other high-demand industries across South Arkansas and the surrounding region.

A Major Investment in South Arkansas Workforce Development

The Manufacturing and Defense Center of Excellence is envisioned as a regional hub for workforce development, advanced manufacturing training, industry collaboration, and economic growth.

Located at SAU Tech's campus in the Highland Industrial Park, the future center will provide students, workers, and industry partners with access to training and resources designed to meet the needs of modern manufacturing and defense employers.

The center will focus on preparing students and working professionals for careers in fields such as:

• Advanced manufacturing

• Defense

• Aerospace

• Industrial technology

• Skilled technical occupations

• Other high-demand industries

By connecting education and industry, SAU Tech aims to help build a highly skilled workforce capable of supporting the continued growth of manufacturing and defense industries in Camden and throughout South Arkansas.

$5 Million Marks First Step Toward $20 Million Federal Investment

The initial $5 million in funding represents the first portion of a previously announced $20 million federal investment dedicated to equipment for the Manufacturing and Defense Center of Excellence.

SAU Tech Chancellor Dr. Jerry Thomas said the funding represents an important step toward making the project a reality.

"We are grateful for this federal investment and for Senator Boozman's leadership in helping secure these funds," said Dr. Jerry Thomas, Chancellor of SAU Tech. "This is a major step forward in the development of the Center of Excellence and moves us closer to creating a state-of-the-art facility that will prepare students and workers for growing opportunities in defense and advanced manufacturing in Camden."

The federal investment is expected to help SAU Tech develop the specialized training capabilities needed to support employers and career opportunities in some of the region's most important industries.

Senator John Boozman Recognized for Support

SAU Tech also expressed its appreciation to U.S. Senator John Boozman for his support and advocacy for the institution and the Manufacturing and Defense Center of Excellence project.

Federal support for the project comes at a time when workforce development is increasingly important to manufacturers, defense contractors, aerospace companies, and other technical industries seeking qualified workers.

For SAU Tech, the new center represents an opportunity to strengthen the connection between technical education and the workforce needs of South Arkansas employers.

What the Manufacturing and Defense Center of Excellence Could Mean for Camden

The future center is expected to have an impact beyond the SAU Tech campus.

As a workforce training and industry collaboration hub, the Manufacturing and Defense Center of Excellence could help students and existing workers develop the technical skills needed to pursue new career opportunities while helping regional employers build a stronger talent pipeline.

The project also has the potential to contribute to economic development in Camden and South Arkansas, particularly as advanced manufacturing, defense, and aerospace industries continue to create demand for workers with specialized technical skills.

SAU Tech's location within the Highland Industrial Park provides an important connection between the college and the industries it serves, creating opportunities for education and training to align closely with real-world workforce needs.

Groundbreaking Event Tentatively Planned for October

With the initial federal funding now received, SAU Tech will continue working toward the next stages of the Manufacturing and Defense Center of Excellence project.

A groundbreaking event is tentatively scheduled for mid-October, marking another anticipated milestone in the development of the facility.

SAU Tech plans to provide additional updates as the project progresses, including information about future development milestones and the center's anticipated impact on workforce training and the regional economy.
