SAU Tech to Host Community Conversations on Defense Manufacturing Center of Excellence
Southern Arkansas University Tech (SAU Tech) is inviting residents, business leaders, and community stakeholders across south Arkansas to participate in a series of Community Conversations focused on the future of workforce development and advanced manufacturing education in the region.
Under the leadership of Dr. Jerry Thomas, the public meetings will place in Dallas, Calhoun, and Ouachita counties and will provide attendees with an opportunity to learn more about SAU Tech's planned Defense Manufacturing Center of Excellence.
The initiative is expected to play a major role in preparing students and workers for careers in defense manufacturing, industrial technology, and advanced workforce sectors throughout Arkansas.
SAU Tech's Vision for Workforce Development in South Arkansas
During each event, Dr. Thomas will present an overview of the proposed Defense Manufacturing Center of Excellence, a transformative project supported by $20 million in federal funding secured through Fiscal Year 2026 appropriations by John Boozman.
The center is being deigned to evolve alongside industry and technology demands, ensuring students receive hands-on training using modern, industry-standard equipment. SAU Tech leaders say the facility will strengthen workforce readiness wile supporting long-term economic growth across South Arkansas.
"These community conversations are an important part of our commitment to transparency and collaboration," said Dr. Thomas. "We want to hear directly from the people we serve as we plan for the future. Their input will help shape this Center of Excellence best supports our students, our workforce, and our region."

Open Forum Encourages Community Input
Following the presentation, each event will transition into an interactive open forum centered on "Questions and Suggestions." Attendees will have the opportunity to ask questions, provide feedback, and discuss how the Defense Manufacturing Center of Excellence can best serve students, local industries, and surrounding communities.
