Rising Coach Brings Collegiate Experience, Player Development Focus, and Leadership to SAU Tech Baseball

Southern Arkansas University Tech (SAU Tech) has announced the hiring of Chris Lara as the new Head Baseball Coach for the Rockets baseball program. The appointment marks and exciting new chapter for the growing NJCAA baseball program as it continues to build a strong foundation for student-athletes across Arkansas and the surrounding region.

SAU Tech Athletic Director Chris Coble officially announced Lara's hiring, highlighting the qualities that made him stand out during the search process.

"Coach Lara is a young and up-and-coming coach who is well respected in the coaching community," said Coble. "His emphasis on discipline, personal growth, and character development set him apart from the rest of the applicants. We are excited that he will be joining the Rockets."

Chris Lara Brings Strong Coaching and Playing Experience

Lara arrives at SAU Tech with seven years of coaching experience and five years as a collegiate baseball player. Most recently, he served as Assistant Baseball Coach at Frontier Community College, where he contributed to player development, recruiting efforts, and program growth.

His coaching résumé also includes positions at Lyon College and Missouri Valley College, where he helped student-athletes develop both on and off the field while supporting successful baseball programs.

As a former student-athlete at Lyon College, Lara earned a bachelor's degree in Exercise Science before completing a master's degree in Academic Administration from Missouri Valley College. His experience as both a player and coach has shaped his leadership philosophy and commitment to building successful programs centered on accountability, growth, and excellence.

A Vision for the Future of Rockets Baseball

Lara expressed his gratitude and excitement about joining SAU Tech and leading the Rockets baseball program into its next phase of development.

“I am incredibly blessed and excited to be named the Head Baseball Coach at SAU Tech,” said Lara. “I want to sincerely thank Athletic Director Chris Coble, Vice Chancellor Dr. Rickey Rogers, and Chancellor Dr. Jerry Thomas for their trust and confidence in me to continue building the Rockets’ program. I am grateful for the opportunity to lead SAU Tech Baseball, and I don’t take that responsibility lightly.”

As the third head coach in program history, Lara inherits a young but ambitious baseball program. The SAU Tech Rockets launched their inaugural season in 2023 and compete in NJCAA Region II, one of the most competitive junior college baseball regions in the country.

Building Opportunities for Student-Athletes Across the Region

Since its inception, the Rockets baseball program has steadily expanded opportunities for student-athletes seeking to continue their baseball careers while pursuing higher education. The roster has attracted players from Arkansas, Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, and other neighboring states, helping establish SAU Tech as an emerging destination for collegiate baseball talent.

Lara is eager to continue that momentum by fostering strong relationships with players and creating a culture that reflects the values of the college and community.

“I’m excited to get to campus, build meaningful relationships with our players, and get to work,” Lara said. “I look forward to building a program that our college, alumni, and community can be proud of, and I can’t wait to begin this new chapter with Rockets Baseball.”

Looking Ahead for SAU Tech Baseball

With a proven background in recruiting, player development, and leadership, Coach Chris Lara brings energy and vision to the Rockets baseball program. His appointment reflects SAU Tech’s commitment to developing student-athletes who excel both competitively and academically.

As the Rockets continue to grow within NJCAA Region II, the future looks bright for SAU Tech Baseball under Lara’s leadership.
