SAU Tech Weather Update: Extreme Cold Warning and Campus Safety Guidance
As extreme winter weather approaches South Arkansas, SAU Tech is closely monitoring conditions to protect the safety and well-being of our students, faculty, and staff. An Extreme Cold Warning is in effect beginning late Friday night and lasting through Monday afternoon, bringing dangerously low wind chills, icy roads, and possible utility disruptions.
Below is everything the SAU Tech community needs to know to stay informed and prepared.
Extreme Cold Warning: What to Expect
The National Weather Service has issued an Extreme Cold Warning from midnight Friday night through noon Monday. During this time, wind chill temperatures are expected to fall well below freezing and remain at dangerous levels for an extended period.
These conditions may result in:
- Hazardous travel due to icy roads
- Increased risk of frostbite and hypothermia
- Possible power or utility disruptions
Students and employees are encouraged to plan ahead and prioritize safety.
SAU Tech Guidance for Students and Employees
Safety comes first.
Students who are able to travel home before conditions worsen Friday evening are strongly encouraged to do so. All students and employees should use their best judgment and avoid unnecessary travel during the warning period.
Will Classes Be Held?
- Friday morning classes will meet as scheduled
- There are no weekend classes
- If weather conditions make it unsafe to hold classes on Monday or Tuesday, official announcements will be sent through SAU Tech’s communication channels
Students should not attempt to travel until road conditions are confirmed safe and clear.

Any delays, closures, or changes to campus operations will be shared through:

Cold Weather Safety Tips
During the Extreme Cold Warning, all students and employees should:
- Limit time outdoors whenever possible
- Dress in warm layers, including hats, gloves, and face coverings
- Use extreme caution when traveling, especially early in the morning
- Report any facility, heating, or water issues immediately
Information for Residential Students
- Residential students are encouraged to travel home Thursday evening or early Friday, if it is safe to do so
- Residence halls will remain open
- Students staying on campus should remain indoors as much as possible
- Student Life staff will continue monitoring conditions closely
In the event of an extended power outage, Manning Hall has been designated as the campus warming station.
Dining Services Update
- Campus dining will be closed this weekend
- Dining operations are expected to resume Monday, January 26, weather permitting
- Prepackaged meals will be provided for residential students

Athletics and Campus Activities
Practices, games, and campus activities may be adjusted or suspended due to weather conditions. Student-athletes should follow guidance from their coaches and the athletic department.
