Mrs. Essie Arnold is a proud native of Camden, Arkansas, where she has devoted her life to family, faith, and service. She is a devoted wife, mother of three children, grandmother of nine, and great-grandmother of seven—leaving a legacy that extends far beyond her immediate family.

She graduated with honors from Lincoln High School and remains actively involved as a member of the Lincoln High School Reunion Committee, currently serving as Secretary for the Class of 1964. Her lifelong commitment to education continued at the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff, where she earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in English with a minor in Speech and Drama. During her time there, she was inducted into the Sigma Tau Delta English Honorary Society, reflecting her academic excellence and passion for communication.

A Career of Public Service and Leadership

Mrs. Arnold dedicated 36 years of service to Ouachita County through her work in the County and Probate Clerk’s Office, where she rose to the position of Chief Deputy County and Probate Clerk. In this role, she played a vital part in the daily operations of county government, including managing payroll for multiple departments and ensuring the proper distribution of tax revenues to schools, public services, and community resources.

Her commitment to public service extended even further when she served as Justice of the Peace for District 10 in Ouachita County. During her tenure, she participated in statewide leadership conferences and performed marriage ceremonies, helping to serve her community in meaningful and personal ways.

Even after retirement, Mrs. Arnold continued her dedication to education by serving as a substitute teacher, helping address the need for educators in local schools and supporting student success in the classroom.

Faith has always been a guiding force in Mrs. Arnold’s life. She is a devoted member of Greater St. Paul Missionary Baptist Church under the leadership of Pastor Jeffrey Franklin. Previously, her dedication to Bible study and spiritual growth was recognized at Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church, where she received special recognition for her commitment to weekly services.

Her leadership extends across numerous organizations that impact the lives of individuals throughout South Arkansas. She currently serves as President of Outstanding Women of Distinction in Southern Arkansas, Inc., an organization that has awarded thousands of dollars in scholarships to local high school students while also supporting vital community resources such as the Women’s Crisis Center and local food pantries.

Mrs. Arnold also serves as Secretary of the Ouachita County Democratic Central Committee and is a member of the Association of Arkansas Counties, contributing to civic engagement and the democratic process at the local and state levels.

Mrs. Arnold’s dedication to service is evident in her extensive volunteer work and community involvement. A Foundation Rooted in Camden, Arkansas

Marcus Copeland is a native of Camden, Arkansas, and a proud graduate of Camden Fairview High School, Class of 2006. His strong work ethic and dedication to serving others began early in life.

At just 16 years old, Marcus secured his first job with Brookshire's Grocery Company while still in high school. During his junior year, he also began working at Williams Funeral Home in Camden. This experience helped cultivate a deep sense of professionalism, compassion, and respect for serving families during life's most difficult moments -- values that continue to guide him today.

Commitment to Higher Education and Student Leadership

After graduating from Camden Fairview High School, Marcus attended the University of Central Arkansas in Conway, Arkansas, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology with a minor in Addictions Studies in 2011.

While attending UCA, Marcus demonstrated a strong commitment to student leadership and service. He actively participated in organizations such as Black Men United (BMU), the NAACP, Keep A Child Alive, and several campus initiatives focused on community service, advocacy, and student empowerment. These experiences helped shape his passion for mentorship, leadership, development, and educational opportunity.

Advancing Student Success at Southern Arkansas University Tech

Following graduation, Marcus briefly lived in Dallas, Texas, before returning to Camden to pursue a career dedicated to education and community impact.

In 2014, he joined Southern Arkansas University Tech as a Career Coach serving Bearden high School. In this role, Marcus worked directly with students to explore career pathways, prepare for college, and develop plans for postsecondary success.

Through hard work, dedication, and visionary leadership, Marcus steadily advanced through several leadership roles at SAU Tech. He served as Student Success and Retention Coordinator and adjunct instructor before being promoted to Director of Student Success.

Today, Marcus serves as the Director of Student Success and Academic Engagement at Southern Arkansas University Tech, where he leads campus-wide initiatives designed to improve student retention, increase engagement, and support higher graduation rates. His work focuses on creating pathways for students to achieve academic excellence, develop career readiness, and reach their full potential.

Service Beyond the Campus

In addition to his leadership in higher education, Marcus continues to serve the Camden community as a Licensed Funeral Director with Williams Funeral Home. In this role, he provides compassionate guidance and professional support to families during times of loss.

Marcus is also a commissioned Notary Public for the State of Arkansas, further demonstrating his commitment to serving the needs of the community.

Marcus Copeland remains deeply involved in community leadership and civic service throughout Ouachita County and the surrounding region.

Southern Arkansas university Tech (SAU Tech) has announced a $20 million federal investment to establish a Defense Manufacturing Center of Excellence, a transformative project aimed at expanding workforce development and driving economic growth across South Arkansas.

The announcement was made by SAU Tech Chancellor Dr. Jerry Thomas during a press conference at the SAU Tech Student Center in East Camden, attended by regional leaders, industry partners, elected officials, educators, and members of the media.

The $20 million investment includes:

• $15 million for construction of a new, state-of-the-art training facility

Southern Arkansas University Tech (SAU Tech) has been awarded $42,574.76 in Perkins Reserve Grant funding to enhance instructional technology in its Practical Nursing (PN) program, strengthening hands-on training for students preparing to enter Arkansas’s growing healthcare workforce.

The funding will be used to modernize the Practical Nursing classroom, including the addition of an IV simulation pump, a key piece of equipment that allows students to practice critical nursing skills in a realistic, controlled learning environment.

Enhancing Hands-On Nursing Education in Rural Arkansas

The Perkins Reserve Grant is part of a federal funding program that supports career and technical education (CTE) institutions that meet specific criteria, such as:

• Serving rural or underserved communities

• Enrolling a high percentage of CTE students

• Addressing documented performance gaps

• Advancing programs aligned with high-skill, high-wage, and in-demand careers

As extreme winter weather approaches South Arkansas, SAU Tech is closely monitoring conditions to protect the safety and well-being of our students, faculty, and staff. An Extreme Cold Warning is in effect beginning late Friday night and lasting through Monday afternoon, bringing dangerously low wind chills, icy roads, and possible utility disruptions.

Below is everything the SAU Tech community needs to know to stay informed and prepared.

Extreme Cold Warning: What to Expect

The National Weather Service has issued an Extreme Cold Warning from midnight Friday night through noon Monday. During this time, wind chill temperatures are expected to fall well below freezing and remain at dangerous levels for an extended period.

These conditions may result in:

Hazardous travel due to icy roads
Increased risk of frostbite and hypothermia
Possible power or utility disruptions

Students and employees are encouraged to plan ahead and prioritize safety.

Safety comes first.

Cold Weather Safety Tips

During the Extreme Cold Warning, all students and employees should:

Residential students are encouraged to travel home Thursday evening or early Friday, if it is safe to do so

SAU Tech Announces Matthew Payne as Interim Head Softball Coach

Southern Arkansas University Tech (SAU Tech) has announced Matthew Payne as the Interim Head Softball Coach for the Lady Rockets Softball team. Payne brings more than ten years of experience in athletic development and collegiate coaching and is committed to continuing the growth and success of SAU Tech Softball.

Payne previously served as Assistant Softball Coach at SAU Tech, working alongside former Head Coach Raley Sullivan. Sullivan recently accepted another head coaching position, and Payne now steps into the interim role to lead the Lady Rockets program.

“Coach Raley Sullivan has been an outstanding representative of SAU Tech and our softball program,” said Dr. Rickey Rogers, Vice Chancellor for Student Services. “We are grateful for her dedication to our student-athletes and the positive impact she made during her time here. We wish her continued success in the next chapter of her coaching career.”

With a background spanning more than a decade, Coach Payne began his career as a strength and conditioning coach, helping athletes maximize performance while maintaining long-term health. During this time, he also coached travel softball, which helped shape his transition into collegiate athletics. Payne has since coached at the NJCAA Division I and Division II levels in Kansas, gaining valuable experience developing student-athletes both academically and athletically.

“We are confident in Matthew’s leadership and his ability to guide our student-athletes during this transition,” said SAU Tech Athletic Director Chris Coble. “He has already demonstrated a strong work ethic and a clear understanding of our softball program’s goals.”

As Interim Head Softball Coach, Payne plans to emphasize hard work, accountability, and excellence. His leadership will guide the Lady Rockets as they prepare for the upcoming season and continue striving for success in the classroom and on the softball field.

“I’m grateful for the opportunity,” Payne said. “My focus is bringing consistent energy every day, supporting our players, believing in each of them, and continuing to build a culture rooted in trust, accountability, and togetherness. East Camden, AR (Wednesday, December 3, 2025) — Southern Arkansas University Tech (SAU Tech) has officially opened its new Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Training Center, a state-of-the-art facility designed to expand EMT, paramedic, and emergency medical training across South Arkansas. The ribbon-cutting ceremony marks a major milestone in SAU Tech’s ongoing commitment to improving regional emergency response and addressing the critical shortage of trained EMS professionals.

The new EMS Training Center is a major expansion of the Arkansas Fire Training Academy, providing increased capacity for CPR certification, Advanced EMT training, paramedic education, and emergency medical simulations. The facility will also support dual-enrollment and workforce development opportunities for both high school students and adult learners seeking careers in emergency medical services.

Student lounge and collaboration areas

Across all three districts, she touched the lives of students and families through her devotion to literacy, academic enrichment, and character-building.

In the spring of 1968, Mrs. Thompson was initiated into the Alpha Rho Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated, the first historically African American sorority. Today, she is a proud Charter Member, Golden Member, and Life Member of the Sigma Beta Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated.

As a dedicated member of Zion Hill Baptist Church, Mrs. Thompson continues to serve in powerful and transformative ways. A woman driven by purpose and faith, she teaches the Young Women’s Sunday School Class, where she has mentored many young women into leadership and ministry roles.

November's Unsung Hero

Lieutenant Colonel (Ret.) Clinton Tyrone Williams has served his country and community for over three decades across the Arkansas National Guard, U.S. Army Reserves, and Active Duty U.S. Army. Born and raised in Camden, Arkansas, LTC Williams embodies the values of honor, education, and service that define both the military and our SAU Tech family.

Early Life in Camden, Arkansas

LTC Williams was born on October 3, 1963, to the late Clinton and Florence Williams in Camden, Arkansas. Growing up in the Harmony Grove community, he graduated from Harmony Grove High School in 1982. Even before completing high school, Williams began his path of service, enlisting in the Arkansas National Guard in 1981 and completing Basic Training at Fort Benning, Georgia.

Academic Journey and Military Commission

Following high school, LTC Williams attended Southern Arkansas University, where he became an ROTC Cadet -- a decision that would shape the course of his life and career. After completing his ROTC training at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock, he was commissioned as a U.S. Army Officer at age 20.

His early military career led him to serve at Fort Campbell in Kentucky, Fort Riley in Kansas, and Fort Pol in Louisiana -- taking on critical leadership roles and mentoring soldiers under his command.

Service in Iraq and Afghanistan

LTC Williams' dedication was tested and proven through his deployments in Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom.

Operation Iraqi Freedom

In 2007, during President George W. Bush's Iraqi Freedom Surge Strategy, LTC Williams was selected to serve as the Senior Advisor to the Iraqi Army Commander of Schools, Doctrine, and Training. His leadership was instrumental in:

• Expanding the Iraqi Army to its largest size in history

• Rewriting Iraqi Army combat doctrine

• Certifying all Iraqi Army units as combat-ready

For his outstanding accomplishments, he received the Bronze Star, Meritorious Service Medal, and Combat Action Badge for direct engagement with enemy forces.

Operation Enduring Freedom

During his deployment to Afghanistan, LTC Williams served as the Theater of War Counter--Improvised Explosive Device (IED) Coordinator, overseeing the deployment and coordination of explosive ordnance assets across the country. His team implemented cutting-edge technologies for identifying, disarming, and researching IEDs -- innovations that saved countless lives.

For this service, he earned two additional Meritorious Service Medals and the U.S. Army Meritorious Unit Medal.

Leadership and legacy

LTC Williams concluded his distinguished career as the Brigade Commander of the U.S. Army 89th Sustainment Brigade, leading more than 3,200 soldiers, sailors, and Marines. Upon his retirement in 2012, he was awarded the U.S. Army Legion of Merit for a lifetime of honorable and exceptional service.

Returning Home to Serve Again

After retirement, LTC Williams returned to his hometown of Camden, Arkansas, where he continues his legacy of leadership and service. Today, he serves as Chairman of Union Grove Concerned Citizens LLC, and organization dedicated to youth education, empowerment, and community service throughout the region.

His commitment to building stronger communities reflects the same dedication he showed in uniform -- proving that leadership doesn't end with retirement; it evolves into mentorship and community action.

SAU Tech Men’s and Women’s Basketball Earn Top-3 Rankings Ahead of 2025–26 Season

Southern Arkansas University Tech (SAU Tech) is proud to announce that both its Men’s and Women’s Basketball teams have earned the #3 ranking in the NJCAA Region 2 Division II Preseason Polls for the 2025–26 season.

This dual recognition reflects the hard work, discipline, and dedication of the SAU Tech Rockets, who are gearing up for another competitive and exciting season. With a strong core of returning players and an infusion of talented newcomers, both programs are expected to make a powerful impact in Region 2 play.

Leadership and Culture

SAU Tech Athletic Director Chris Coble expressed pride in the recognition, noting that it represents more than just a preseason prediction:

“Being voted third in the Region 2 preseason poll by fellow coaches is more than a ranking—it’s a testament to the relentless work and winning culture Coach Pagan II and Coach Brooks have built at SAU Tech. The respect speaks volumes, and the court will echo it all season long.”

Chancellor Dr. Jerry Thomas echoed that sentiment, highlighting the growth of SAU Tech’s athletic programs and their impact on the campus community:

Both Men’s Head Coach Bryant Pagan II and Women’s Head Coach Aramie Brooks acknowledged the honor but emphasized that preseason rankings are just the beginning.

“Rankings are nice, but we want the end result of cutting down nets, winning titles, and putting up banners. So, more work to be done,” said Coach Pagan II.

“Preseason rankings are a great starting point, but our focus is on the finish line—winning championships, raising banners, and leaving a legacy. We’re ready to put in the effort,” added Coach Brooks.

The Rockets are coming off seasons that showcased both resilience and skill, with strong finishes and memorable performances in regional competition. The #3 preseason ranking positions both teams for an even stronger campaign as they chase championships in the 2025–26 season.

Though born in Stockton, California, Reverend Renix has called Camden, Arkansas home since early childhood—a place where his values of family, community, and church were deeply shaped and remain foundational to his character.

Early Life and Military Service

A 1979 graduate of Camden High School, Reverend Renix began his path of discipline and leadership by enlisting in the United States Army, where he served with distinction in the 101st Airborne Division, known for air assault operations.

During his military tenure, he was deployed to Germany and the Persian Gulf, and received multiple commendations, including the Good Conduct Medal, Certificates of Achievement, and Letters of Accommodation—all recognizing service beyond the call of duty. His advanced training through the Army Primary Leadership Development Course and the Basic Noncommissioned Officer Course honed his tactical, technical, and leadership skills.

A Journey Through Work and Worship

Reverend Renix's professional journey has taken him through diverse roles—from Jordan Pontiac and Camden Country Club, to Georgia-Pacific in Fordyce, Arkansas, where he worked for 17 years. Yet, it was within the Church of God in Christ (COGIC) at Mt. Sinai that his adult Christian ministry began to flourish.

Over the years, he has served faithfully in a various pastoral roles:

• Assistant Pastor at In Time Worship (8 years)

• Assistant Pastor at Mt. Sinai COGIC (3 years)

• Since 2011: Associate Pastor at Whitest Chapel Missionary Baptist Church -- a congregation with deep family ties, founded by his grandmother Willie White and supported by his mother Mary Renix

Ministerial Calling and Theological Focus

Ordained and licensed in October 2000, Reverend Renix has continued to grow as a minister, Christian educator, and spiritual mentor. His theological emphasis includes:

A Certified Leader through the Ministers Division of the Ouachita District Association since 2011, Reverend Renix is devoted to deep Biblical study, emphasizing accurate interpretation, wisdom, and spiritual understanding.

In November 1992, Reverend Renix experienced a devastating, nearly fatal accident that altered the course of his life. He credits his faith and belief in divine purpose for carrying him through that period, leading to both horizontal (outward) and vertical (spiritual) growth.

This life-changing event deepened his reverence, humility, and gratitude—qualities that now define his every act of ministry and service.

Gregory Atkins was born to Essie Arnold and Elmer Atkins in Camden, Arkansas, where his early exposure to creativity and community shaped the artist he would become. Arkansas Fire Training Academy to Celebrate New EMS Building with Ribbon Cutting Ceremony

The Arkansas Fire Training Academy (AFTA) is excited to announce the grand opening of its new Emergency Medical Services (EMS) training building with a ribbon-cutting ceremony on November 19, 2025, at 1:00 PM on the AFTA campus. This state-of-the-art facility will enhance the academy’s ability to train and prepare EMS professionals to serve communities across Arkansas.

The public, community leaders, and media are invited to join AFTA for this milestone event. For those interested in arriving early, a complimentary lunch will be provided by Great Western Dining on the AFTA campus starting at 11:30 AM. Dr. Cellestine "Tina" Mayweather, ThD., DCEd., DMin., is a distinguished theologian, educator, author, and United States military veteran whose life of service spans classrooms, pulpits, and military bases across the country. Born and raised in Camden, Arkansas, she embodies a legacy of faith, education, and community service rooted in early exposure to the Mission of God (Missio Dei) through her family.

Early Life in Camden, Arkansas

Tina Mayweather was born to the late Harvey and Lillie Mayweather as the middle child of eleven siblings. Her spiritual foundation was shapes early by her grandmother Isabel and reinforced by her parents' commitment to daily mission work. A lifelong member of Whitest Chapel Missionary Baptist Church in Camden, Dr. Mayweather's devotion to ministry began in her youth and has grown into a powerful calling.

Academic Journey and Theological Training

A graduate of Lafayette High School, Dr. Mayweather pursued higher education with excellence. She earned degrees from:

• University of Arkansas

• Andersonville Theological Seminary

Her academic path reflects a lifelong commitment to theological inquiry and educational leadership, both in civilian institutions and military settings.

A Dual Military Career: U.S. Air Force and Army Reserve

Dr. Mayweather served with distinction in both the United States Air Force and the United States Army Reserve, first as a Finance Officer and later as a Materiel Officer. her military journey began after a successful internship at Southwestern Bell and the Veterans administration, followed by employment at Texas Instruments as a Research and Engineering Administrator in Radar and Digital Systems.

Her military and civilian assignments included key roles at Red River Army Depot, Fort Bliss, Fort Benjamin Harrison, and Fort Riley, among others.

Dr. Mayweather's devotion extends beyond formal titles. As a spiritual advisor for Hospice and long-time community leader, she remains a strong advocate for compassion, dignity, and faith in action. Within her church, she has led as a youth director, Sunday school teacher, benevolence administrator, and missionary.

She is also a prolific exegetical writer, poet, and motivational speaker. Her work emphasizes purpose, humanity, and divine calling. Dr. Mayweather has received numerous awards and recognitions from organizations such as:

Originally from Grenada, Mississippi, Julie is a graduate of Mississippi Valley State University with a degree in Mass Communication. She is a proud mother and grandmother whose strength, resilience, and compassion shine in all that she does.

In 2019, Julie founded Impact Camden, a nonprofit organization dedicated to "Strengthening the Hearts of the Community." Through Impact Camden, Julie offers resources, mentorship, and educational opportunities to help individuals advance in their careers and personal lives. Her approach is always grounded in love, empathy, and hands-on community involvement.

Making a Difference in Camden and Beyond

Julie Brown's commitment to volunteerism in Ouachita County is unmatched. Her contribution include:

• Leading Covid-19 relief efforts in the region.

• Organizing the Mayor's Gala.

SAU Tech held a groundbreaking ceremony at the location of the College’s new student housing on November 8, 2017.
