Dr. Corbet Lamkin, SAU Tech Chancellor, Robert Gunnels, Vice Chancellor for Instruction, Gena Medford (Multimedia Secretary), and others attended a special presentation held in the Multimedia Department at SAU Tech on February 14, 2008. Diane Atchison, chair of the Camden Business and Professional Women’s Barn Sale, and Eloise Oliver, Barn Sale Publicity Chair, presented an award to John Rockwell, Multimedia Web Design and Development faculty member, and several of the multimedia students who developed a new BPW website. Students present who worked on the web site were Tanner Nussey, Brian Dixon, Dion Honnell, and Sam Hilson. Josh Manuel and Tim Goad worked on the site, but were unable to attend. Last year the BPW Barn Sale committee members asked the Multimedia department to design and develop a new and improved website for the Barn Sale. The Barn Sale committee members suggested what they wanted from their website and the students developed several mockups. The committee members were delighted with the final product and have received numerous compliments on the site. Atchison stated that when the Arkansas Festival Association sent entrance forms for the competition for event website, the BPW Barn Sale committee believed they had the best website and entered their site in the competition. In January 2008, during the annual ALFie awards presentation, the climax of the Arkansas Fair Association annual conference, theCamden BPW Barn Sale received the Arkansas Festival Association’s 2007 Event Website Gold Award. Atchison and Oliver wanted to share their achievement with those whose inspiration and hard work allowed the Barn Sale to win the award. Oliver said that the site continues to generate a great deal of interest in the Barn Sale and Atchison said that they have been pleased with the earlier than usual inquiries that they have received this year about the Barn Sale. | Web program graduate website project garners magazine recognition | |||

You can read an abbreviated version of the magazine at http://www.sbdc.uwf.edu/newsletter.pdf, under the heading of "Crestview Community Television". Although Brian's name isn't directly mentioned, he created and is managing the ongoing project from code to graphics and online video delivery. Brian commented that "The CVCTV site has been a tremendous challenge but also a rewarding opportunity. It has helped me begin to build a client base in that particular part of the state and should prove profitable in the future. Recently, with the help of second year Web Design & Development program student Sam Hilson, the site was completely overhauled in order to improve certain features and now offers visitors a smoother, more efficient viewing experience. The CVCTV site is currently on pace to get 40,000 page views this month!" CVCTV CEO, website owner and client Mr. Ken Nielsen provided the following comments about Brian’s work: “When I began to envision what I would like Crestview Community Television to look like I knew that I wanted it to have a television theme. I wanted individual channels, not tabs or buttons. I also did not want the status quo website layout. I had no intention of cluttering up the site with Google ads and hot key links. I searched the Internet and found a number of sites in which had various designs of players that I liked. I then got with Brian and immediately he caught my vision. His very first graphical design is nearly exactly how the final site looks. He helped me build the players to allow for advertising to be embedded in them. These ad spaces have become the largest revenue generator of the site. We had minor changes in component size and color scheme changes along the way but for the most part Brian had within two weeks the look that we are using today. I had no idea when I began this project what a Flash player or CMS" (Content Management System) "was. Brian tutored me along the way through the entire project and made the learning curve a simple one. He researched for me the software that I would need to convert the AVI files to Flash. He custom built a user friendly CMS with drop down menus that has cut in half the time it originally took me to upload stories. What Brian and I have created is on the cutting edge of ways that local communities can get vital and fun information out via the internet. None of the other designers bidding on this project came close to capturing my idea in graphical layout design or functionality Brian has taken his private website design & development consulting practice to a new level, keeping so busy that he hasn't had to consider going to work for a company any time soon – something he never thought possible before graduating from SAU Tech. Brian is a 2007 National Technical Honors Society awardee and when needed, provides adjunct services to SAU Tech Multimedia in the area of Web Design & Development. John Rockwell, Brian’s former Instructor commented that "Brian was one of those students who simply worked hard, evolved a great deal of hidden talent and had a passion for a career in Web Design & Development. That hard work, talent and passion have paid off already – not one year after graduating. I see this in many of our students – diamonds in the rough so to speak! This field we call Multimedia is challenging and extremely opportunistic for those ready to take the plunge. I am very proud of what Brian has been able to accomplish and expect that he (and others) will make a positive mark in whatever local or global web community that they work within". You can visit the website that Brian designed and developed at http://www.cvctv.info. SAU Tech offers an Associates of Applied Science (AAS) degree in Multimedia with emphasis areas in Web Design & Development, Graphic Design and Film & Video Production and Technical Certificates in Web Design & Development, Graphic Design and Film & Video Production. One of the fastest growing departments within the University, their website is located at http://www.sautech.edu/multimedia/. |

Things have been quite busy for Multimedia students as the Fall term comes to a close. Website projects have really picked up steam. Here's a few projects that are being worked on. Lacey Potter (Web Design & Development student) and Charlene (Sam) Burson (Film & Video Production student), have both just completed their first term here in Multimedia and are working on a privately managed project to develop a website for a Church in Camden, Arkansas. Jessica Brumley (Web Design & Development student), is preparing to enter her fourth and final term and has taken on a privately managed website design project for a Bank. Sam Hilson (Web Design & Development student) is preparing to enter his third term and is designing a privately managed website for a large theater chain in south Arkansas. Web Design & Development adjunct faculty Instructor and Web Design & Development program graduate Brian Dixon is working on a large, privately managed project for a company that specializes in custom saw blades. Brian is a National Technical Honors Society award winner. John Rockwell, Web Design & Development Instructor and his wife Aundria (SAU Tech Housing Manager), are working on an privately managed website related to a nationally broadcast television series. The department is in the later phases of negotiations to develop two officially sanctioned website projects benefitting student portfolios. These sites are related to collegiate sporting goods and a popular band from the '70's. These sites would be created over the Spring 2008 term. A website developed by Multimedia students in the Spring of 2007 has been entered into a Website Design contest. Awards will be announced in January of 2008 -- stay tuned. Website Design & Development projects are a huge benefit to student portfolios and clearly demonstrate that academic programs are working well in SAU Tech Multimedia.

SAU Tech Multimedia, in an effort to continue its rich history of providing a well-rounded academic and practical educational experience, announced the release of 3 client website projects on 5/31/07. Students from the Web Design & Development and Graphic Design programs worked on the "real world" projects throughout the Spring 2007 term. These projects extend the practical experience of Multimedia Web Design & Development and Graphic Design students. Applying their academic and practical skills in the areas of project management, design, coding, animation and online video adds great relevancy and value to each students academic portfolio. Projects are designed to compliment the rich educational experience Multimedia students already receive, preparing them for the actual job market. These reflect positively on the college and its mission of putting students first! Graphic Design Instructor, Ashley Moore, mentored her team and commented "What a motivating and rewarding experience these webpage designs have been for the Graphic Design students! With each client came a new challenge for the participating designers who competed against one another for the winning webpage design. They worked closely with the client to customize a webpage that would be both visually appealing as well as an accurate representation of the goals and objectives of the business or organization. Webpage design is a highly sought after skill of graphics designers and the knowledge these students obtained will serve them extremely well in the current job market. I was overwhelmingly pleased with the creativity and skill demonstrated by each of these Graphic Design students. Any of the designs submitted for review would have represented the client very well. In fact, each client expressed the challenge faced by choosing only one of the two designs they were presented." Graphic Design students included Brandon Allen, Billy Law, Dion Honnell, Billy Hughes and Mary Brown. Web Design & Development Instructor John Rockwell mentored his team and commented "There is nothing comparable to the experiences gained through practical experience. The time pressures, decision making and work processes involved with these projects relate directly to academics and truly show the students what it will be like in the job market. I was truly impressed with the way the students worked as teams, integrated their project design and coding processes and put together 3 truly outstanding websites. The clients are very pleased with the work ethic displayed and end results. These students have incredible potential and demonstrated that they can succeed in their Multimedia disciplines". Web Design & Development student Project Managers included Brian Dixon, Sam Hilson and Josh Manuel. Coding and animation support was provided by Tanner Nussey, Jessica Brumley, Jennea Page, Sonya Hamilton, Marcus Pierce, Ashley Lindsey, Arlene Webb and Tim Goad. Vice Chancellor for Instruction Robert Gunnels commented "I am extremely proud of what these students have accomplished and the benefits this experience will bring to them when they have completed their education and begin looking for employment. Employers have told us how prepared our students are to enter the workforce because of the real world, hands-on experiences the multimedia faculty give them." PROBLEM: If you've recently upgraded to Internet Explorer 7 and are running Flash Player v9+ and now find that some websites run Flash content just fine, but others don't, there may be an issue when IE7 attempts to reinstall the Flash plugin control. Our website uses a scripting technology that automatically checks for the Flash plugin, but since IE7 hasn't correctly registered the plugin, you will see a message (graphic at the top of the web page) requiring that you install the Flash plugin. Regardless of how many attempts you make at installing the plugin, you still don't see Flash content. A fix that we find works well (but is not guaranteed) is to run the Flash Uninstaller from Adobe. Once it has completed, run the Flash Player plugin installation. Here are the steps required that should fix the problem:

Hello! Well, after waiting several months for Windows Vista to be released and thoroughly reviewing Vista system requirements, I finally went and purchased a copy -- Windows Vista Ultimate. Having Windows XP Professional (and the current service pack) installed on my HP Pavilion dv8000 series laptop, I saved a few bucks and purchased the Ultimate (upgrade), Bill Gates signature edition. Yeah, I know -- "Bill Gates signature edition"? Hey, it'll be a collector's item in 20-30 years! Following guidance provided from a number of reliable sources, I ran an updated virus scan, backed up, defragmented, optimized and generally pruned where possible to open up as much hard drive space as possible for the upgrade. It was recommended that I have approximately 15MB of free space. Upgrading system RAM by adding an additional 1GB, disabling anti-virus software and ensuring that drivers and other items were checked, updated and other housekeeping chores noted in the Windows Vista Upgrade Advisor proved prudent. The in-place upgrade went smoothly -- believe-it-or-not, I didn't encounter one error or conflict message. The entire process took about 2 hours. Be patient! The laptop I upgraded is used in teaching my courses; however, we have an XP Pro workstation configured in the Instructor's position in the lab with identical software required for coursework as a backup for our laptops. Was I rolling the dice so to speak? Well, perhaps, but I was confident after the tremendous amount of alpha and beta testing of the product and reading countless articles, blogs and forum threads about Vista and software/hardware compatibility issues, that the software was stable enough and this laptop, which was only about 5 months old, would make it through. Lesson: do your homework! FYI: Here's some specifics on the laptop's hardware:
Teaching numerous client/server software packages and configurations in the Web Design & Development program, I'll admit, I was anxious to run each through its paces, monitoring suspect compatibility issues. Here are the software packages tested and results:
Software packages yet to be tested:
Overall, I was very pleased with the results. The system appears to be running more efficiently, although some localized and network metrics have yet to be analyzed. The GUI (including Aero and Flip 3D enhancements) are cool, but generally eye candy, requiring DirectX 9+ support. It takes some time to get used to the general layout and organization of the new O.S., but it's nothing overwhelming. Critical applications needed for teaching my Web Design & Development program appear to be stable. Tabbed browsing is nothing new to the Firefox community, but is handy in I.E. 7. Security issues such as BitLocker Drive Encryption and various I.E. security features will be analyzed over the next several days. Should you upgrade? Well, that's your call (aka -- John won't provide Tech. Support :-). If you do, I would highly recommend using the tools at your disposal (Vista Upgrade Advisor), hardware and software-specific vendor website information and prepping your system to make it as clean and close to meeting Vista system requirements as possible before any upgrade. Keep up with Live Updates if you do decide to go with this version and backup critical files often. I have also dumped my previous integrated security and virus protection suite, in favor of Windows Live One Care for additional Security, Virus protection and integration ease with Vista. It's install went cleanly, although you may need to tweak your settings (under User Accounts Control. Note: Use Caution! -- make sure you have some form of Firewall if network connected and Virus Protection) to reduce the tireless amount of dialogue boxes warning you about risks. I'll attempt to provide another update as time rolls on with Vista, but until then, I'm very pleased. I would be very interested in any comments from current or prospective SAU Tech Multimedia students if you decide to do a clean install or upgrade to Vista. Send your comments to jrockwel AT sautech.edu. Include "Windows Vista Experience" in the e-mail Subject line. On a side note, Microsoft has re-designed a large portion of their website. Graphically, it's very pleasing. Validation-wise, I'm not going to bother! It's Web 2.0'ish at the presentation level, and organizational heirarchy has been improved. John Rockwell, Multimedia Instructor DISCLAIMER: SAU Tech neither endorses or provides an opinion of this software review. It is provided by the Instructor as a point of reference for students of SAU Tech Multimedia. Decisions on individual, privately owned software and hardware configuration changes are the sole responsibility of the owner/student. |
