OUACHITA-CALHOUN COUNTY LITERACY COUNCIL
Ouachita Calhoun Counties Literacy Council helps adults living or working in the counties of Ouachita, Calhoun, and Union who want to achieve functional levels of reading, writing, math, and speaking English so that they may improve the quality of their life, enter into the workforce, and/or improve their ability to participate in the community. OCCLC is a learner centered agency that provides free tutoring in a one-on-one or small group environment to Arkansas residents, age 18 and older, with low literacy skills. Additionally, instruction and resources are provided to those who want to learn or improve their English Skills through English as a Second Language instruction. OCCLC tutors are volunteers specifically trained in proven methods for working with improving adult basic skills and adult basic English as a Second Language skills. Learning materials are provided for instruction in basic reading, writing, math, spelling, grammar, and for the improvement of conversational English, grammar, and pronunciation at no cost to the learner. Volunteer tutors are always needed. Tutor training is provided by the OCCLC and is broken into short learning segments. Tutors must be 18 years or older, proficient in reading, writing, and the English language, and able to volunteer at least once a week for one and one half hours each week. The ability to speak or understand a second language is not required to tutor with non-English speaking learners. The Ouachita Calhoun Counties Literacy Council is an affiliated member of both Arkansas Literacy Councils Incorporated and Pro Literacy America. OCCLC is in key partnership with the Adult Education Program of Southern Arkansas University Tech in Camden.
