Literacy-Coalition South Central Arkansas
The Literacy-Coalition South Central Arkansas (LCSCA) provides literacy services to adults and families living or working in Calhoun, Dallas or Ouachita Counties. The LCSCA provides free tutoring in reading, writing, math and English as a Second Language, and facilitates various projects for the advancement of literacy. The vision of LCSCA is to assist adults in becoming economically self-sufficient, employable and able to continue on to higher levels of education; the council’s mission is to empower communities and encourage literate lifestyles.
The LCSCA is an affiliated member of Arkansas Literacy Council Incorporated, Pro Literacy America, and the Council on Adult Basic Education. The council is a host site for Arkansas READS and supports AmeriCorps members who address the issue of literacy in South Central Arkansas area communities. LCSCA operates in partnership with SAU Tech’s Adult Education Program in Camden.
Tutors for LCSCA are volunteers trained to provide literacy services using the most recent strategies and methods. LCSCA is always in need of instructional volunteers and invites anyone that is 18 years or older, proficient in reading, writing, English and math, and is able to volunteer at least once a week for 1-2 hours to call 870.837.4005. Other volunteer opportunities are also available.
The LCSCA is governed by a volunteer board of directors which represents each county that the organization serves.

South Central Arkansas Advocates for Adult Literacy (SCAAAL)
Through a special project and financial assistance from the National Coalition for Literacy (NCL), the South Central Arkansas Advocates for Adult Literacy (SCAAAL) was established in 2010 by the staff of LCSCA. SCAAAL is a team of volunteers who are active in advocating for adult literacy from grassroots to federal levels. Volunteers become members of the council and choose to represent LCSCA’s interest through a variety of ways. Members may become invited guest speakers on behalf of the council, recruiters of adult learners and tutors through hosted events, provide technology assistance to the council, host fundraising events, meet with local, state, and federal officials to promote the needs of adult literacy, etc.
LCSCA provides training, information, and technical assistance to its SCAAAL volunteers at no cost. Membership is open year-round. To join SCAAAL, or to get more information, contact Linda at 870-837-4005 or 870-836-7700.
