Backflow Course Descriptions

 

Backflow certification training provided by the Arkansas Environmental Academy is endorsed and approved by the Arkansas Department of Health, Louisiana Department of Health and Hospitals, Lousiana State Plumbing Board, Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) for individuals wishing to be certified as a:

  • Backflow Assembly Tester Technician
  • Backflow Assembly Tester Recertification 
  • Backflow Assembly Repair Technician
  • Backflow Assembly Advanced Repair (Texas)
  • BPAT Practical Skills Refresher Course (Texas)
  • Cross-Connection Control Program Specialist
  • Customer Service Inspector (Texas)
  • Water Supply Protection Specialist

Backflow Assembly Tester Certification
This is a comprehensive 40- hour course designed to train the student in the fundamentals necessary to field test the various types of backflow prevention assemblies (Reduced Pressure Principle Assembly, Double Check valve Assembly, Pressure Vacuum Breaker Assembly). The Backflow Prevention Assemly Tester Dertification course is comprised of a series of lectures and hands-on training. Topics covered in this course include an introduction to backflow prevention, fundamentals of backlfow, hazards of cross-connections, basic hydraulics, methods and mechanisms for preventing backflow, Cross-Connection Control Programs, responsibilites and liabilities of the water purveyor, plumbing snpectors, testers, and the general public, laws and regulations (Local, State, and Federal), and a minimum of 12-16 hours of hands-on testing in a controlled laboratory setting.

Assembly Tester Recertification
This 8-hour recertification course is designed for current Assembly Tester Technicians to renew their current license as required by the Arkansas Department of Health. The course consists of a series of lectures with a minimum of two hours of hands on testing in the lab. The student must satisfactorily complete a written exam and a performance (lab) exam at the completion of the course.

Backflow Assembly Repair
This is a comprehensive 24-hour course designed to train the student in the fundamentals necessary to repair the various types of backflow prevention assemblies in the field. The Assembly Repair Technician Certification course is comprised of a series of lectures on troubleshooting backflow assemblies, various components in the assemblies, manufacturers Recommendations, laws and regulations (Local, State, and Federal), and a minimum of 8-hours of hands-on troubleshooting in a controlled laboratory setting.

Backflow Assembly Advanced Repair
This course is designed to provide the student with the fundamentals necessary to properly Repair backflow prevention assemblies and devices. This is a three day advanced course for individuals currently holding a Texas Backflow Prevention Assembly Tester ( BPAT) Certification. This course is compresed of a series of lectures on troubleshooting backflow asemblies, various components in the assemblies, manufacturers recommendations, laws and regulations (Local, State, and Federal), and minimum of 8-hour of hands-on troubleshooting in a controlled laboratory setting.

- This course may be used to satisfy the 24-hour Texas BPAT Renewal requirement.
- This course may be used to satisfy the Assembly Repair certification training requirement for the Arkansas Department of Health.

BPAT Practical Skills Refresher Course
The BPAT Practical Skills Refresher Course is an 8-hour course designed to provide the student with the hands-on training necessary to satisfy the current TCEQ regulations for Backflow Prevention Assembly Tester liense renewal.

Cross-Connection Control Program Specialist
This course is designed for those individuals who are involved in administering the Cross-Connection Control Program. The course is comprised of a series of lectures consisting of policies and procedures, recordkeeping , public relations, proper installation of approved backflow prevention assemblies, determining the appopriate Degree of Hazard, conducting a site survey.

Customer Service Inspeciton
This 16-hour program specialist course is designed for those who are involved in administering a cross-connection control program in the state of Texas. The course consist of a series of lectures on policies and procedures, record keeping, public relations, proper installation for backflow assemblies, degree of hazards, and conducting site surveys.

Water Supply Protection Specialist (cost varies)
 This course is designed for those interested in receiving the Water Supply Protection Specialist endorsement through the Louisiana State Plumbing Board. The endorsement allows the student to perform field tests and make necessary repairs of backflow prevention assemblies within the scope of the plumbing system in the state of Louisiana. The course consist of a series of lectures on the theory of backflow, hazards of backflow, basic hydraulics, methods and mechanisms for preventing backflow, assembly troubleshooting, assembly repair, and responsibilities and liabilities. The course also includes at least twelve hours of hands-on testing and troubleshooting of the RP, DCVA, and PVB in the lab. The student must satisfactorily complete a written exam and a performance (lab) exam at the completion of the course.
