Firefighter Track – Courses in this track are designed to provide participants with the knowledge and skills to function as a firefighter within a fire department. Firefighter I certification indicates a person may function under direct supervision and Firefighter II indicates the individual may function under general supervision. Modules 1 – 17 are required for individuals to qualify for the Firefighter II certification exam.
Course # - NFGAO380 Minimum Standards Firefighter Course
This is a comprehensive, 7-week course designed to introduce the knowledge and skills necessary to function at a fire department at the Firefighter II Level. There will be evening and weekend assignments. This is a physically demanding course and participants should be prepared to endure numerous classroom presentations and outside, “hands-on” skill sessions. Successful completion of the course is required to qualify to sit for Arkansas Firefighter Certification. Topics covered in the course are general knowledge and skill requirements; fire department communications; fireground operations; rescue operations; and prevention, preparedness, and maintenance. There will be written and skill evaluations throughout the course and for certification. Required manuals will be available through the SAU Tech Book Store
Pre-requisites: AFA First Responder or equivalent and fire department sponsorship. To attend without sponsorship, individuals must contact AFA registration department for course fee information to attend.
NOTE: Unless other arrangements are made in advance students are expected to bring personal protective equipment including SCBA.

Course # - NFGA0012 FF Module 1: Introduction to Protection- Taught by a Certified Training Officer and an Instructor I, need AFA approval.
This module introduces participants to the knowledge and skills called for in NFPA 1001 in the subject areas of Fire Department Orientation, Fire Behavior, and Firefighter Safety. There will be both classroom and "hands-on" application. Students will practice safety procedures concerning fire apparatus and fire service equipment. This course meets one of the requirements set forth by the Arkansas Fire Protection Services Board for a department to qualify to receive its Act 833 monies.
Pre-Requisites: None other than fire department affiliation. Students must be 18 years old or older.
NOTE: Individuals already having this module do not have to retake the class for credit.

Student will don and doff PPE. Timed drills are part of learning how to prepare for a rapid response.

This module introduces participants to the knowledge and skills called for in NFPA 1001 in the subject area of Fire Hose. There will be both classroom and "hands-on" application. Student will practice hose rolls, carries, and fire loads. Student will also learn how to inspect, maintain, and test fire hose.

Student will practice using the various fire service ladders found on fire apparatus. Student will also learn how to inspect, maintain, and test ladders.

This module introduces participants to the knowledge and skills called for in NFPA 1001 in the subject areas of Ventilation, Forcible Entry. There will be both classroom and "hands-on" application. Various applications of ventilation practices, forcible entry techniques, and property preservation using loss control methods will be conducted.

Course # - NFGF0016 FF Module 6: Water Supply, Fire Streams, & Portable Extinguishers - Taught by an Instructor I, need AFA approval. This module introduces participants to the knowledge and skills called for in NFPA 1001 in the subject areas of Water Supply, Fire Streams, & Portable Extinguishers. There will be both classroom and "hands-on" application. Students will learn how to measure their water supply, apply different types of fire streams, and use portable extinguishers.

Course # - NFGG0016 FF Module 7: Structure Fires I - AFA approval needed. Taught by an Instructor I. This module introduces participants to the knowledge and skills called for in NFPA 1001 in the subject area of Fire Control. The majority of the class will be “hands-on” application. Various fire simulations will be presented to applicants during the "hands-on" portion of this class. Students must successfully extinguish fire simulations while applying the correct fire control attack; hose advance application, and entry techniques.
Pre-requisite: FF Modules 1-6: NOTE: These subjects are required by NFPA 1403to be taught prior to entry into a training live-fire.

This module introduces participants to the knowledge and skills called for in NFPA 1001 in the subject area of Fire Control. There will be very little classroom and a lot of "hands-on" application. This module will be made up of numerous scenarios for fire attack. This is a continuation of the application of the knowledge and skills found in the Structure Fires I course.

Course # - NFGR0016 FF Module 9A: FD Communications, NFIRS and ICS - Taught by an Instructor I. This module introduces participants to the knowledge and skills called for in NFPA 1001 in the subject areas of Fire Department Communications, National Fire Incident Reporting System along with the State of Arkansas requirements and Incident Command System. There will be classroom activities that include application of the Incident Command System as well as participants completing an NFIRS report on an incident.

The major focus is on practical skills with a minimum of classroom time. Scenarios for this module will be based on extinguishing fires along with victim rescue and retrieval.

Students are to demonstrate the knowledge and skills retained to this point by applying them to more advanced scenarios.

This module introduces participants to the knowledge and skills called for in NFPA 1001 in the subject area of Fire Control. This class will consist of classroom and "hands-on" application of the skills retained. Scenarios for this module will be based on the exterior fire extinguishments requirements of NFPA 1001. FF Modules 20 & 21 may be taken in place of Module 12.

This module introduces participants to the knowledge and skills called for in NFPA 1001 in the subject area of the First Responder duties when responding to suspicious fires. This is a National Fire Academy class. Participants learn to recognize potential evidence in a suspicious fire and discuss ways to preserve the fire scene.

Modules 1 - 4 are required for individuals to qualify to take the Driver Operator certification exam (Module 5). This module evaluates the participants on their knowledge and skills pertaining to emergency vehicle operations and pump operations as called for in NFPA 1002. Candidates must score 70% or greater on the written exam and pass the skills exam to become Arkansas Driver Operator Certified.

Course # - NFDP0064 Fire Service Instructor-I Course - Taught by an Instructor I. This is a comprehensive, 1-week course designed to introduce the knowledge and skills necessary for fire service instructors to deliver instruction effectively from a prepared lesson plan, including instructional aids and evaluation instruments; adapt lesson plans to the unique requirements of the students; organize the learning environment so that learning is maximized; and meet the record-keeping requirements. There will be pre-course reading assignments and homework assignments each evening. This is a very compact course and participants should be prepared to endure numerous classroom presentations and labor-intensive skill application. Successful completion of the course is required to qualify to sit for Arkansas Fire Service Instructor-I Certification exam. Topics covered in the course are program management, instructional development, instructional delivery, & evaluation and testing. There will be written and skill evaluation for certification purposes.

This module introduces participants to the knowledge and skills called for in NFPA 1041, Chapter 4, in the subject areas of Instructional Challenges, Instructional Delivery, Psychology of Learning, the Lesson Plan, Instructional Media Aids, & Presentations. There will be both classroom and "hands-on" application. Students will show how to use a lesson plan for instructional deliveries. Short presentations and record-keeping practices will also be part of the class.
Pre-Requisites: Firefighter I Certification or FF Track Module 2.
NOTE: There will be a written exam covering the material presented in this module at the end of the training. This module replaces the old ITCO course and meets the criteria for individuals seeking Certified Training Officer Status. Individuals with CTO status or having previously completed the ITCO training successfully, need not retake this module.

Course # - NFMU0016 FSI Module 2: Safety in Fire Service Training, Testing and Evaluation, & Legal Considerations in Training - Taught by an Instructor I.
This module introduces participants to the knowledge and skills called for in NFPA 1041, Chapter 4, in the subject areas of Safety in Training, Testing and Evaluation, & Legal Considerations. There will be both classroom and "hands-on" application. Students will demonstrate how to use testing and evaluation results to enhance student learning. Safety and Legal issues will also be discussed.
Pre-Requisites: FSI Module 1 or CTO status or ITCO course. For individuals with CTO or ITCO seeking to complete the "Bridge" program, the FSI Module 2 is the beginning point.
NOTE: A written exam will be administered at the conclusion of the training session covering the material discussed in the module.

Topics covered in the course are program general knowledge and skills, scene investigation, documenting the scene, evidence collection & preservation, interviewing, post-incident investigation, & presentations.

Provides training for the initial responder to recognize the signs of an intentionally set fire, preserve evidence, and properly report the information. Basic topics include: Fire behavior, critical observations of the first responder, fire cause, scene security and evidence preservation, legal considerations, and reporting of findings. Taught by an Instructor I.
Pre-Requisites: The target audience is for fire service personnel with fire investigation job responsibilities.

Fire Officer Track - This track is designed to provide participants with the knowledge and skills to function as a Fire Officer within a fire department. Fire Officer I training and certification indicates a Fire Officer is trained to function at a supervisory level within a fire department. Fire Officer II indicates a Fire Officer II is trained to function at a supervisory/managerial level within a fire department. The comprehensive Fire Officer I course or modules 1-3 is required for individuals wishing to train or certify to the Fire Officer II level. Required manual is available at the SAU Tech Book store
Course # - NFJA0040 Fire Officer-I Course - Taught by an Instructor I. This is a comprehensive 1-week course designed to introduce the knowledge and skills necessary for fire service personnel to function at the Fire Officer-I level. The knowledge and skills required to function at this level are identified in NFPA 1021-I, Chapter 4. Fire officers at this level are expected to function as supervisory personnel within the department. There will be homework assignments. This is a very comprehensive course and participants should be prepared to endure numerous classroom presentations and "hands-on" skill sessions. Topics covered in the course are general knowledge and skills; human resource management; community and government relations; administration; inspection and investigations; emergency services delivery; & health and safety. There will be written and skill evaluations throughout the course and comprehensive testing for certification purposes.

This is a comprehensive, 1-week course designed to introduce the knowledge and skills necessary for fire service personnel to function at the Fire Officer-II level. Fire officers at this level are trained to function at the supervisory and managerial level within the department. There will be homework assignments. This program is designed for Company Officers who aspire to promote to Chief Officer, or for recently promoted Chief Officers. To effectively manage a situation, proper ICS staffing and organization must be in place to ensure that all activities are occurring towards the completion of the common goal.

History, benefits, and multiple purposes of the incident command system will be reviewed. This process can be used in times of crisis, special events, and in the course of normal operations. To effectively manage a situation, proper ICS staffing and organization must be in place to ensure that all activities are occurring towards the completion of the common goal.

Course # - NFPP0016: Introduction to Industrial Fire Protection-Incipient Fire Brigade This program is designed to give basic introduction to Industrial Fire Protection, and meets the minimum standards set forth in OSHA 1910.156 Sub Part L and NFPA 600. This covers fire brigade organization, theory of combustion, fire extinguishers, use of 1 1/2-inch hose and related equipment. This course includes utilization of the Incident Command System. Necessary resources include a classroom and an area to discharge water through hose lines.

Course # - NFPQ0024: Introduction to Industrial Fire Protection-Incipient Fire Brigade This program is designed to give basic introduction to Industrial Fire Protection. Course # - NFPR0040: Industrial Fire Brigade, Structural This one week program covers fire brigade organization, fire behavior, use of related equipment for fire suppression, use, care and maintenance of self-contained breathing apparatus, salvage and overhaul system and industrial fire prevention concepts. Live fire and flammable liquid burns are included. The course meets and exceeds OSHA 1910.156 Subpart L and NFPA 600.

Course # NFPS - Industrial Firefighting Techniques Structural This program covers fire behavior, initial fire attack procedures, use of the fire hose and related equipment for total fire extinguishments, protective equipment including self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA), and the use of the incident command system.

Course # - NFPU0016: Industrial Flammable Liquid Fire Control This program is designed to cover flammable liquid fire behavior, techniques for the control of flammable liquid fires, use of the appropriate foaming agents, water application for fire control and the use of an incident command system.

Course # - NFPY0040: Instructor I This forty (40) hour program prepares the student instructor to teach from prepared programs and to understand the development process. The objectives of NFPA 1041 are met in this course. Communications, lesson plan design, teaching to objectives, teaching techniques, evaluation process and testing procedures are included. Homework assignments and night sessions included. This course may be applied towards the degree program through the Portfolio Development and Review Process.
