| From the 1940s through the late 1960s, fire training was conducted throughout the state. The Arkansas Fire Training Academy (as it was originally named) was formally established in 1967 as a training division of the Southwest Technical Institute (later to be known as Southern Arkansas University Tech). The offices and training site were located in the Highland Industrial Park, the former site of Shumaker Navy Weapons Depot. Fire Station 1 - 1950s The administrative offices for the new fire academy were set up in what was once the main fire station of the weapons depot. Arkansas Fire Training Academy - 1970s This building served as the AFTA Admin Offices, primary classroom and central training location until Phase I construction at the Camden training site was completed in 1973. Lead Instructor The Lead Instructor of the Arkansas Fire Training Academy was Witt Murphy, for whom the facilities at the Camden Training Site are named. Camden Training Site and Offices The Camden Training Site includes three large classrooms, a conference room and offices. Training props include, a large two-story burn building, a small single-story burn building, a smoke building, a five story drill tower and other various training props. We also house four pumpers in an apparatus bay.
AFA Dormitories Each room consists of two single beds, one to two desks, and two wardrobes. There is common kitchen area open from 6:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. Friday evenings and 8:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays. Refrigeration is limited. |
